Fun things to do with Cheerios cereal
Exploring Play
Pour some Cheerios into a washing up bowl and
provide smaller containers for filling, emptying and pouring – hours of
fun and really good for hand eye co-ordination and manipulation skills!
Developing Skills
Empty Cheerios onto a tray and put a
bottle in the centre. Work together to fill the bottle. Use wide neck
or narrow neck bottle depending on the level of challenge you want.
Encourages turn taking as well as physical skills.
Threading
Provide some Cheerios in a small bowl and help
your child to thread them onto wool or string. For safety keep any
strings less than 20cm. For younger children - use a pipe cleaner or
drinking straw that will stay straight for easier threading. Good for
fine motor skills and hand eye co-ordination – older children can even
thread patterns using the different colours.
Mathematical Development
Using spotty paper—can you put one
Cheerio onto each spot. Develops one–to-one matching which is an
important pre-counting skill.
Make your own Play-dough
Let your child get involved with
stirring, mixing and coloring their own play-dough. As with all dough
it is important to make sure your child does not eat it. You will need:
2 cups of plain flour
1 cup of salt
¼ cup of lukewarm water
Tablespoon of cooking oil
Food coloring
Combine the dry ingredients first in a plastic bowl. Add the water, oil and a few drops of your favourite colour and watch the dough come together like magic as you mix and knead it. Your finished dough will last in an air tight container in the fridge for a couple of weeks so you can play with it again and again.
